William (Bill) Chalmers graduated from the University of Toronto in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science. He attended Osgoode Hall Law School where he received several academic awards including the prizes in Criminal and Contract Law.
Bill has exclusively practiced insurance litigation at Hughes Amys in Toronto, since his call to the bar in 1987. He has been a partner of the firm since 1990.
Over his legal career, Bill has developed a focus on first party insurance disputes; in particular coverage, property and disability claims. He has extensive courtroom experience with a number of reported decisions at all levels of courts in Ontario, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also appeared as counsel in other jurisdictions in Canada, and as an expert witness on Ontario law in the Superior Court of Quebec. Bill frequently speaks at seminars, most recently on issues of fraud/arson, coverage and disability claims.
Since 2006, Bill has been the Managing Partner of Hughes Amys. He is a director of the ARC group of Canadian insurance counsel. He is a member of the Ontario Bar Association, the Canadian Defence Lawyers and the Advocates Society. Bill is listed as a 2016 Lexpert Ranked Lawyer and was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in Canada 2017 in the field of Insurance Law.
Bill is an active member of his community and has volunteered his time as a hockey and basketball coach and is involved in a number of charitable endeavours.
