As an articling student at Hughes Amys LLP, you will be exposed to all aspects of our firm’s practice, and to all aspects of the practice of insurance defence law.
Our program is intense, and hands-on. It is our aim to instill in you the skills and training required to emerge from your articling term as a competent and confident litigator.
During the first few months of your term, you will take part in a series of in-house seminars designed to ensure that your hands-on training is supported with formal training. You will also participate in bi-weekly team meetings with the entire firm where new case law and developments in our field are discussed. As a part of Hughes Amys LLP, you will also have access to our superior Knowledge Management system, our daily case law updates, and to our firm wide continuing legal education seminars.
As part of your day to day experience, students will:
- Meet with clients;
- Prepare research memoranda, opinions, mediation memoranda, and pre-trial briefs;
- Draft motion materials, pleadings and facta;
- Have full carriage of Small Claims Court matters and run Small Claims trials;
- Argue motions;
- Attend at examinations for discovery, mediation and pre-trials; and
- Assist senior counsel at trial and on appeal.
We are committed to teaching our articling students as many skills as possible during the course of your articling term. We strongly encourage shadowing our experienced litigators at examinations for discovery, mediations, and in court. You won't simply be working behind the scenes on files. At Hughes Amys LLP, when you work on a file, you can expect to attend to observe and assist on all aspects of the file with the lawyer with carriage.
But training isn't our only focus. We are equally committed to ensuring that you are provided with guidance and mentoring throughout your term.
As an articling student at Hughes Amys LLP, you are assigned both a mentor and an articling principal. We take special care in creating a support system that will allow you the opportunity to have a point person to answer any questions you may have, and to provide you with advice and assistance throughout your articling year. Your articling principal will ensure that you're receiving regular feedback on your work, and that you're getting the most out of your articling experience.
At Hughes Amys LLP, it is our aim to ensure that you excel at your articles, and develop the skills that you need to become an asset to our firm, and to the profession. We are proud of our articling program and the excellent results it yields, and we encourage you to apply to be part of it.
