Richard F. Horak has been a partner since 1982 and has practised with the firm since his call to the Bar in 1979. Although Richard practices principally out of the Toronto office, he also regularly works out of the Hamilton office, serving clients in Hamilton and in the Niagara Peninsula.

His practice principally involves a wide variety of insurance issues, including personal injury, property damage, automobile insurance, products liability, occupiers’ liability, professional error and omissions, and general negligence. He also specializes in construction defects claims. In addition to his insurance-related practice, Richard also handles employment law issues.

Richard has acted as lead counsel on a number of trials in the Ontario courts and has appeared in the Ontario Court of Appeal on a variety of matters. Much of his practice involves attendances at examinations for discovery and mediations, mostly on behalf of defendants.

With over thirty years experience he is well-suited to assisting in the resolution of personal injury and insurance claims. Richard also offers his services as a mediator along with his practice as counsel.

For more than fifteen years Richard has been the editor of Noteworthy, the firm’s newsletter. In addition to contributing articles to Noteworthy, he has written several articles that have been published in various magazines. Richard has also spoken at seminars on a variety of topics, including damages in motor vehicle cases, punitive damages and social host liability.

Richard is a member of many legal organizations, including the Advocates Society, the Canadian Defence Lawyers and the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto. For many years Richard was actively involved with the Joint Committee on Court Reform (Case Management).

Richard obtained his LL.B. at the University of Toronto, after completing two years there studying political science and philosophy. He obtained his Certification as a Specialist in Civil Litigation in 2002.

He is an avid recreational tennis player and enjoys basketball at all levels, having coached the latter for many years.
