Michael S. Teitelbaum joined the firm and was called to the Bar in 1981. He has been a partner since 1982.
Michael practises civil litigation with an emphasis on insurance and insurance-related matters. His extensive practice has a particular focus on insurance coverage and policy interpretation on behalf of both insurers and insureds. He is also engaged primarily, but not exclusively, in the defence of professional liability, governmental liability, products liability, environmental law, personal injury and defamation matters. Michael has appeared before all levels of the Ontario courts and various administrative tribunals.
He is a prolific writer and speaker on various legal issues. His articles have appeared in, among other publications, For the Defense, the Canadian Journal of Insurance Law, Without Prejudice and Canadian Independent Adjuster. He has recently spoken, principally on insurance coverage issues, at conferences sponsored by the Osgoode Hall Law School Professional Development Program, The Canadian Institute, Insight and the Canadian Defence Lawyers, as well as at client seminars. Michael is the general editor of LexisNexis Butterworths’ Canadian Journal of Insurance Law. He is also the consulting editor of LexisNexis Butterworths’ Insurance Law and Commentary, 2005 Edition, which contains a current commentary on insurance law that Michael co-authored.
Michael holds a B.A. (Hons) from the University of Toronto (1976), and received his LL.B. from the University of Ottawa Law School (1979), where he was awarded the Carswell Prize for Torts (1976/77), was the articles editor of the Ottawa Law Review (1978/79) and graduated cum laude. He was certified by the Law Society as a Specialist in Civil Litigation in 2000. Michael is the Head of both the firm’s Insurance Coverage Counsel Group and Professional Development Program.
He is an avid reader, movie-goer and TV watcher (when he has the time), and is a general pop culture, news and sports aficionado.
